5 Contactless Morning Meeting Activities

MORNING MEETING ACTIVITIES
Adding morning meetings to my classroom was an absolute game-changer. It is a time of day where we can focus solely on enjoying each other’s company and building relationships with our students. This classroom community is so important - especially during a year where so many things are uncertain. But how do we continue with this routine during the year of masks, social distancing, and even virtual instruction? Here are a few ideas for contactless morning meeting activities that can be done in a socially distanced classroom OR virtually.
1. RAINSTORM
This is one of my students’ favorite activities! It’s also a great activity for days when you’re short on time. In this activity, students use their hands and feet to create the sounds of a rainstorm rolling in and gradually getting more intense.
2. FREEZE DANCE
An old classic that works well in a socially distanced classroom! Students will spread out and “glue” their feet to one spot to maintain a safe distance while they dance. Need some music ideas? Check out this Youtube channel!
3. MINDFUL BREATHING
Looking to start your day with some calm? This mindful breathing activity is perfect for just that! Click the image below to be taken to a guided breathing video.
4. GUESS MY NUMBER
This activity brings some number sense work into your morning meeting time! The more you play, the more you’ll see the progression from students guessing a single number to asking questions that give them more information about the number (ex: is it greater than 10? Is it even?)
5. DIRECTED DRAWINGS
I loved using directed drawings on Fridays in my classroom. They take a bit more time, but not only do students love them, they’re great for spacial reasoning and fine motor skills. This Youtube channel has hundreds of directed drawings to choose from!
