5 Contactless Morning Meeting Greetings

Inside: These morning meeting greetings will breathe life into your morning routine while keeping your students safe and socially distanced

MORNING MEETING GREETINGS

Our students need the consistency, predictability, and community-building benefits of morning meetings now more than ever, but how do we safely execute them during a pandemic? Contactless greetings are the perfect way to bring the relationship building value of the morning meeting into your classroom while maintaining a safe distance. The best part? They can be done in person or remotely, so your students can continue to participate in their classroom community if your school has to shift to remote learning. Here are some of my favorite contactless greetings:

1. AIR HIGH FIVES

This greeting is just what it sounds like! Instead of actually touching hands, students will give “air high fives” from a distance. Make it even more fun by adding sound effects! PSSSHAW!

2. I CAN DO THIS!

This is the perfect greeting for a morning when you’re short on time, because it combines a greeting and activity! Here’s how it works. Give students time to think of a short action (a clapping pattern, stomping pattern, etc). Choose a student to begin. They’ll say, “My name is [name], and I can do this!” and perform their action. The class will say, “Their name is [name], and they can do this!” Continue around the circle until all students have had a turn, and voila! - greeting AND activity, done!

3. CLOSED EYE GREETING

For this greeting, students will need to be seated so everyone is facing each other (while still socially distant, of course!). All students will begin with their eyes closed. Start by choosing one student and greeting them with a “good morning, [name]!” This student will open their eyes and look around to find another student who still has their eyes closed and greet them! Continue this process until all students have been greeted. I love this one because it is quick but every student is still greeted by name!

4. WHO DO YOU SEE?

This greeting is patterned after “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, who do you see?” Choose a student to begin. The class will say, “[name 1, name 1,] who do you see?” and the student will name the student next to them by saying “I see [name 2] looking at me!” Then, the class will say, “Good morning [name 2]!” this continues around the circle until all students have been greeted by the class.

5. KNOCK, KNOCK!

This greeting is another one of my favorites because it helps students remember how to say their first and last name (believe it or not, so many of my students didn’t know how to say their whole names at the beginning of the year!). Here’s how it goes:
